VOA has a 45 minute “Talk2Us” via Skype service on Tuesdays and Fridays at 15:00 GMT.

All participants need to do is logon to Skype and send a contact request to: VOALearningEnglish

World Freedom Day

World Freedom Day is a United States federal observance declared by former President George W. Bush to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of communist rule in Central and Eastern Europe. It started in 2001 and is celebrated on 9 November.

For this occasion, conservative youth groups such as Young America's Foundation and the College Republicans urge students to commemorate this day (which they mark as the start of "Freedom Week," thus including Veterans Day) by "celebrating victory over communism" through provocative flyer campaigns and activism projects

Over two million children die from pneumonia each year, accounting for almost 1 out of 5 children under-five deaths worldwide. Many of these deaths can be prevented with inexpensive antibiotic treatments for as little as $0.30. We should strive to prevent children under 5 from developing pneumonia in the first place, by giving vaccines, better nutrition and reducing risk factors.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women/ 16 Days Campaign

By resolution 54/134 of 17 December 1999, the General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and invited governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designated to raise public awareness about gender-based violence on that day. Women's activists have marked 25 November as a day against violence since 1981.
