This Resource Toolkit contains lesson plans, videos, photos, movies, articles, and documentaries to be used at American Spaces to highlight LGBTQI+ Pride Month and the history of the gay rights movement.

WHAT IS LGBTQI+ PRIDE MONTH?

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the modern Gay Liberation Movement in the United States paving the way for future activism and legislation.
Celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, and concerts. LGBTQI+ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally. *

MOVIES
Freeheld (1 hour 43 minutes) – A New Jersey police lieutenant, Laurel Hester, and her same-sex partner are forced to wage a legal battle to secure Laurel Hester’s pension benefits for her partner after she is diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Philadelphia (2 hours 4 minutes) – After a man with HIV is fired by his law firm because of his condition, he hires an initially homophobic lawyer to fight his wrongful dismissal suit.
The Last One: Unfolding the AIDS Memorial Quilt (1 hour 12 minutes, available on Kanopy) – An updated history of the AIDS epidemic in America through the story of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The film traces how what at first was labeled a “gay disease” now disproportionately impacts the African American community, including women and youth.
Coming Out: A 50 Year History of Public Gay Identity (57 minutes, available on Kanopy) – A compilation of interviews with men and women who discuss the challenges they face in both confronting and revealing their sexual identity.

Kuma Hina (2014) 77 minutes – A transgender Hawaiian teacher inspires a female student to participate in an all-male-hula troupe.
