World Bee Day

World Bee Day: Honoring the Buzzing Powerhouse Workers of our Ecosystem

World Bee Day, celebrated annually on May 20th, provides an opportunity for the special acknowledgment and education of the important part bees as a species play in building connections throughout our global ecosystem. Around the world, over 20,000 types of bees exist across six continents. While different in shapes, sizes, and capacities, they all contribute to making the earth a more sustainable and livable environment.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2017, May 20th was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping and a symbol of the importance of bees. Since its inception, the special day has expanded to a global movement primarily fueled by social media awareness campaigns and efforts from STEM education programs.

Bees are among the most important pollinators on Earth, helping assist with the reproduction of flowering plants, including many crops that humans rely on for food. As of 2024, it is estimated that one-third of the food we consume as humans depends on pollination, with bees contributing significantly to this process. Beyond agriculture, bees also support natural ecosystems by pollinating wild plants while helping sustain diverse wildlife.

Apart from their role in pollination, bees, specifically the appropriately named honeybee, also produce honey, beeswax, and other hive products that humans have used for centuries. Honey, in particular, has nutritional and medicinal properties, making it not just a sweet treat but also an invaluable natural resource.

World Bee Day also focuses on understanding the many threats bees face globally including the loss of natural habitat through urbanization, climate change, and complete eradication from pesticides.

How to Celebrate World Bee Day

World Bee Day is the perfect opportunity for individuals, communities, and organizations from our global community to take action and show support for bee conservation. Here are some ways to celebrate:

  1. Plant Bee-Friendly Gardens: Grow a variety of native plants that provide food and shelter for bees. While bees are active primarily in the Spring and Summer months, you can choose flowers that bloom year-round to help them sustain during colder weather.
  2. Support Local Beekeepers: Purchase honey and hive products from local beekeepers who practice sustainable beekeeping methods. Supporting beekeepers helps sustain bee populations while promoting local biodiversity and encourages everyone to “shop local.”
  3. Celebrate Bees Online: Online platforms play a significant role in raising awareness about World Bee Day. Social media campaigns, virtual events, webinars, and educational resources reach a global
audience and encourage individuals to take action in their communities. Share information about World Bee Day on social media using hashtags like #WorldBeeDay and #SaveTheBees. Use your
online presence to advocate for bee conservation and inspire others to take action.
  4. Show Your Love with Style: Businesses and entrepreneurs create bee-themed products such as artwork, clothing, jewelry, and eco-friendly goods to commemorate World Bee Day. These items not only celebrate bees but also contribute to fundraising efforts for bee conservation projects.

By embracing a diverse range of activities and initiatives, this day can help inspire a global movement dedicated to protecting bees, preserving biodiversity, and creating a lasting future for all living beings on our planet.
